Jean-Daniel Pollet is a poet that uses cinema to create
his own poetry. Above all, he has a sensitive glance,
Id say, on colours. Most of his films, in which he
releases the game of inspiration where colour prevails,
prove that he is an unfeigned and spontaneous painter.
All this becomes cinema. But, first and foremost, it is
poetry. There is a great relevance between cinema that
is perceived as a positive misbelieve, the voice and all
we can imagine.
(Philippe Sollers / Surpris par la nuit)
Why
do the ruins of Palmyra, of Balbec, of Egypt attract me
so? Why do I get carried away? Why cant life, everyday
life carry me away? What should I answer? There is
something unchanging there, whereas life is made of
tragedies. There is no tragedy there. Theres just us
there. In Bassae, I find us again. Its a bit hard to
find what this and a broken jug have in common. Theres
no us in the jug. The jug is broken. Why do I like it
better broken than whole? Lets just leave this mystery
be, because if I knew exactly what to say, I would be a
rationalist, I would make rationalistic film, that would
speak of such things that would probably not interest
anyone anymore...

Soon
as I crossed the little yugoslavian bar and right after
the little greek one, I had a sudden glimpse of my life.
I was born here, I was born in this country. Why? Maybe
because of the music played in a nearby juke-box, maybe
because of something else, I never found out, but I
said: this is my country as much as my own country
itself.
