The development of free, independent and
professional media is a one of key EU strategy
to sustaining stability and functioning
democracies in the region of the Western
Balkans. This includes professionalisation of
media and the promotion of high standards as
important tools for fostering the democratic
stabilisation of the region.
In the framework of EU Community Assistance for
Reconstruction, Development and Stabilisation
(CARDS) Regional Programme 2003, the European
Commission provides support to independent
television production and regional co-operation
by financing joint television production
ventures made by television production companies
and broadcasters from the EU and/ or candidate
countries and the CARDS region.
Eight EU funded projects are currently ongoing including joint
television productions covering the areas such
as: Justice (e.g. reform of justice, corruption,
organised crime, rule of law, etc.), Social
Issues (e.g. youth, poverty, discrimination
against specific groups, based on ethnicity,
religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc.),
Culture (e.g. history, language, music etc.),
Environment (e.g. air, water, etc).
In order to promote those productions, the
European Commission in cooperation with the
Rodos International Film Festival and Visual
Arts Festival is organising a two days event
with representatives from the selected projects
from the Western Balkan countries as well as of
the public broadcasters with the aim of:
